Move Smart With These Packing Tips

Moving can be both one of the most exciting life events and one of the most stressful.  You have to worry about packing, where to get boxes, how to transport everything, and which box you packed your toothbrush in by accident.  And if you’re not careful, moving can get unexpectedly expensive!  So whether you’re moving around the block or across the country, here are a few tips to make packing for the big weekend easier.

Don’t Pay for Moving Boxes

Office supply stores, truck rental places…there are a lot of places you can go to purchase moving boxes.  But why spend the money when you can ask friends?  Or go by a grocery store and see if they have any boxes they can part with?  Not only are you saving money, you’re helping to recycle boxes that might otherwise be thrown out.

Make a Packing Kit

There is nothing worse than sitting down to pack and realizing you can’t locate a roll of packing tape.  Or that pack of Sharpies you just bought the other day.  Or starting to work on packing and realizing you’re hungry.  Keep those necessities close by, along with a good snack and some water for break time.

Only Get Help With Transporting

While it might be nice to get help with packing, do you really want to have other people telling you what to keep and what to get rid of?  Your best bet is to pack everything yourself, then offer the standard pizza bribe to get friends to help you move the boxes.

Make a ‘First Night’ Box

When you finally get to your new place, the last thing you’re going to want to do is dig through tons of boxes to find your pajamas, toothbrush, medications, or anything else important.  Keep a small box or tote bag with those essentials packed inside so you don’t have to go looking for them.

Use Small Boxes for Books

Books are deceptively heavy when it comes to packing.  It’s better to use smaller boxes and make more trips with books than to risk hurting yourself.

Clean Out Your Makeup

While you’re packing for the big move, it’s also a good time to go through your toiletries and medications.  Throw out anything that is expired, or that you no longer use.
